purveyors of fine meat

About Us
Legacy Herefords is a small beef operation in Whatcom County, WA, owned and
operated by Erick and Allison Aurand. The herd is comprised of a select group of
registered Polled Hereford cattle whose genesis rests with Allison's grandfather,
Howard Deets, who developed his Deets' Polled Hereford Ranch over the course
of nearly 50 years. When the majority of the herd was liquidated in 2007, Allison
chose a small group of cows and a homebred bull from the old farm to continue
on her grandfather's vision of excellence in quality, production, and disposition.
Sometimes, Erick and Allison have lives outside of Legacy Herefords. Erick works
as a civil engineer specializing in drainage and stormwater issues, currently as part
of Castanea Associates , a consulting business he owns with Allison. He also
provides technical assistance on permitting for projects, environmental mitigation
projects, and transportation issues.
Allison, whose roots run deep in agriculture and Washington, does not stray
quite so far from the farm in her work on rural and agricultural policy, agricultural
land use issues, farmland preservation, and farm succession.
We are passionate about our cows.
At Legacy Herefords, we believe that to produce the best beef and the
highest quality cattle takes vision, commitment, and a lot of love.
We are committed to producing only the highest quality natural
Hereford beef.
We are committed to carrying forward a vision of Hereford quality,
production, and disposition developed over decades of thoughtful
breeding and management.
We believe our animals deserve to be treated with dignity and respect
at all times.
Not every animal at Legacy Herefords ends up on a plate. Legacy Herefords' excellent natural beef is due, in large part, to the
excellent cows that produce and raise our steers.
We have a core group of high-production, high-quality cows with outstanding dispositions who provide us with consistently
superior offspring.
Genesis of the Farm
Allison and her grandfather Howard Deets

Working alongside Howard on those special "big farm" days
strengthened the already powerful bond between Allison and her
grandfather; and the love, care, and respect he had for his animals
and his farm fostered in his granddaughter a lifelong passion for
agriculture that helped guide her career as she left and then
eventually returned home to Whatcom County.
Howard also earned the respect of his peers for the quality of his
animals, the care he gave them, and the strength of his handshake
deals. His memory and legacy are respected by those peers.
Allison's grandparents, Howard and
Dorothy, were lifelong animal lovers.
They had pets of all shapes and sizes, and
raised beautiful horses, then cattle.
They took great joy in nurturing Allison's
love of animals as she grew, and visits to
"the little farm" with Grandma and "the
big farm" with Grandpa are cherished
memories.
Legacy Herefords is about family - respecting, honoring, and
continuing the legacy built by Howard and Dorothy Deets.
Legacy Herefords is about strength, determination, and
commitment - struggling, we hope successfully, to bring one man's
vision for his farm and animals back from the brink of destruction.

About the Cattle
The Mommas and girls aren't food! They raise the tasty beef, but these ladies are
permanent members of our family.
It pays to be a girl (or Bubba) if you're a cow in our herd; you get petted, praised for
being fat and sassy, stuffed full of nummy food, and lounge around a big open
pasture with a fantastic view of Mount Baker.
